The newest sign up bonus on each of the Southwest Airlines personal credit cards gives you 30,000 miles and Companion Pass through 2019. You’ll need to spend $4,000 in the first three months with either card to get it. Is this the right deal for you? Let’s take a look.
Value of 30,000 Miles
Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards are worth about 1.5 cents each, so 30,000 miles is worth about $450 in free flights. The great thing about Southwest Airlines is that the cost of a flight in points is tied to the actual cost. If it’s a cheap flight, it will be cheap on point. You don’t have award charts like other airlines.
Southwest Airlines Companion Pass allows you to bring a person with you for free. Your flight can be booked with either cash or points and your companion flies with you at no cost. Plus, you can change who your designated companion is up to three times per year, so it doesn’t always have to be the same person.
If you use the 30,000 points you get with the sign up bonus for yourself and bring someone with you, it’s essentially worth 60,000 points. But, the sky’s the limit. If you travel a lot with with family or friends, this could be worth a tremendous amount of money.
If you only use Companion Pass for one or two short flights this year, it probably doesn’t help you. But, if you travel quite a bit on Southwest, and plan to bring someone with you, Companion Pass could easily be worth $1,000 or more.
