You love your Disney card, but you wish it earned rewards a little faster. If that describes you, this is your post. Here’s how to utilize the strengths of your Disney Premier Rewards card and improve upon the weaknesses. You can do this by using credit cards that complement each other. Most cards offer higher rewards in certain bonus categories, but lower rewards rates on everything else. When you use cards that complement each other, you can significantly increase how much you earn overall.
Strengths of Disney Card
Grocery Stores, Gas Stations, Restaurants, and Disney Locations
The Disney Premier Visa earns 2% back in rewards dollars on purchases at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and most Disney locations. It earns 1% back on everything else. So, using the Disney card in the 2% categories, but using other cards in the 1% categories can help you maximize your rewards.
|Spending Category||Rewards Rate|
|Grocery Stores, Gas Stations, Restaurants, and Disney Locations||2%|
|All Other Spending||1%|
The perks of the Disney card are probably its greatest strength overall. The special character meet & greets at the parks, 10% of dining and merchandise, a $50 cruise credit, and more, make it a card to keep for the Disney fanatic. We’ve written a post just about the perks we love HERE.
Discover it Cash
Earn Up To 10% Cash Back
The Discover it Cash gives you cash back up to 10% in rotating bonus categories each quarter (5% up front, doubled at end of first year). Since bonus categories change every three months, this shouldn’t be your primary credit card. But, it can really boost your earnings if you use it to complement your Disney card. It also has no annual fee, so it won’t cost you anything to add it. In 2016, bonus categories have included: gas, ground transportation, restaurants, movies, home improvement stores, Amazon.com, department stores, and Sam’s Club.

|2) All cash back is doubled at end of first year as a card member|
Since this card earns cash back, you can use what you earn in any way you need for your Disney vacation. Read our full review of the Discover it Cash card HERE. If you decide it’s the right card for you, you’ll get a $50 sign up bonus using one of the application links on our site.
Starwood Preferred Guest
Get a FREE Hotel Stay
Starwood is the hotel chain that runs the Swan and Dolphin and Sheraton Park Anaheim. These are fantastic places to stay at Disney World and Disneyland, both extremely convenient. Starwood also has the single most valuable travel point, worth about 2.4 cents each.
In this scenario, you would use your Disney card for the 2% categories of gas, restaurants, groceries, and Disney stores. The Disney Rewards you earn could be used for park tickets, park food, etc. Then, you could use the Starwood card for all the purchases that would only have earned 1% with the Disney card. This would end up paying for your hotel stay.
Since the Starwood points are worth 2.4 cents each, you’re earning 2.4% back on average. Now, with both cards, you’ll be earning at least 2% back on every purchase, some on the Disney card and some on your Starwood card.
|Starwood Preferred Guest Amex Strengths|
|1) Most valuable travel point, valued at 2.4 cents each|
|2) 5th Night Free at most Starwood hotels when using points|
The points you earn with this card can quickly cover the cost of your of hotel stay. We’ve even written a couple posts about this: Five Free Nights at the Dolphin and Five Free Nights at Sheraton Park Anaheim. You can also read the full review of the Starwood card HERE.
A Card in Your Wallet
Maybe you already have another card in your wallet you can use for this strategy. Do an inventory of the credit cards you already have and see if any of them might compliment your Disney card well. While we love the cards we’ve suggested, you might still earn a little more by more strategically using what you already have in your wallet.
