The new Chase Freedom bonus categories have posted for the months of January through March, 2020. You’ll get 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in spending at gas stations, internet, cable & phone services, and select streaming services. But, how helpful is this for a Disney vacation?
Does this help save on Disney Gift Cards?
One of our favorite reasons for having the Chase Freedom is that it has no annual fee and earns 5% cash back at places that sell Disney gift cards. And really, that 5% cash back comes in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards which we can combine in our Chase Sapphire Preferred account increase the value with an Ultimate Rewards Strategy.
Gas Stations – It’s relatively common for gas stations to sell Disney gift cards in the convenience store. But, I would recommend testing this first. If the gas station is tied to a grocery store or another type of store, the transaction could code to that business and not count as a gas station purchase.
Other Ways to Save
Of course if you’re driving to your Disney vacation, 5% cash back on your gas is a nice savings.
You can also prepay most cable, phone, and internet services. So, if you wanted to prepay your bill, you’d earn 5% cash back even though it might not catch up until after the bonus category has ended in April or later.
It does not appear that you can prepay most streaming services. And, they aren’t usually large purchases, so I’m not sure it’s worth your time to change your payment method for three months and then change it back. Remember, if you’re not earning 5% cash back through bonus categories with your Chase Freedom, you’re only earning 1% which is lower than what you should get. So, if you forget to change it back, you’ll be earning a low rate starting in April.
Select Streaming Services
Since, “Select Streaming Services” sounds kind of iffy, here’s the list from Chase of what will earn the bonus cash. You’ll notice Disney+ is missing. 🙁
- Fubo TV
- Apple Music
We love our Chase Freedom card; so much so that we have two of them. But, this is kind of a “meh” quarter. We’ll use it at gas stations and prepay our phone and internet bills, but it’s not a great bonus category quarter for Disney gift cards.
